The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the ban of Red dye 3, which is used in a wide range of food and beverages. Here, we explain the reason behind the ban and which products contain it.
What is Red dye 3?
Red 3 dye, also known as erythrosine, is a petroleum-derived additive used to give food and drinks a bright red color similar to that of cherries.
Why did the FDA ban Red dye 3?
The ban follows a 2022 request from advocates who argue that the additive is linked to cancer and behavioral issues in children.
The request to remove this dye was based on two studies that showed cancer in male lab rats exposed to high levels of Red 3, though the FDA maintains that these effects do not occur in humans.
It is important to note that in 1990, the United States banned the use of Red 3 in cosmetic products due to findings of cancer in lab rats.
