Bertha Gisela Gaytán Gutiérrez, the candidate from the Morena party for the mayorship of Celaya, was murdered during a campaign event in the community of San Miguel de Octopan.
The events occurred a day after the electoral campaigns for mayors in the state of Guanajuato had started.
Several videos of the moment the attack was registered have been circulated on social media, which took place in the afternoon of April 1st, while the candidate was on a tour.
Shortly before suffering the attack that cost her life, Gisela Gaytán spoke to the media about the issue of security in the campaign. In a video posted on her social networks, the Morena candidate started her campaign with the following message:
“Today, the people of Celaya feel like survivors. Along with you, I want us to be the change of our present, looking towards the future, that together we find the courage to face fear, reinvent things, and transform our city.”
So far, no arrests have been reported in connection with the attack on the mayoral candidate of Celaya. Some reports indicate that two people were injured in this attack.

Who was Gisela Gaytán?
Gisela Gaytán was a litigating lawyer and Mexican politician, born in Celaya, Guanajuato.
She completed her law studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she graduated with a thesis on adoption in homosexual marriages.
She began her political career in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), where in 2018 she presented her candidacy for the local deputy. Later, she joined the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), becoming the first female representative of this party for the mayorship of Celaya.
During her time with Morena, she held the position of state councilor in Celaya. In addition, she played significant roles in the public and youth sectors, being vice president of the Board of Directors of the National Youth Council of the Mexican Youth Institute (Imjuve), head of social comptrollership of the city of Celaya (2013), and member of the Citizen Council for the Follow-up of Public Policies in Youth Matters (CONSEPP) of the Imjuve between 2015 and 2017.
When are the elections in Guanajuato?
On June 2nd, the inhabitants of the state of Guanajuato will elect the new state governor; mayorships and the Local Congress will also be renewed. The citizens of Guanajuato will also vote to elect a new President of the Republic, federal deputies, and senators.
