Aldi, the well-known supermarket chain, has continued to gain more customers thanks to its low prices, which have positioned it ahead of major retailers like Walmart and Target, according to the 2025 Price Leadership Report published by Forbes magazine. But who owns Aldi, and what is the secret behind its success? Here’s what we found.

Who owns Aldi?

Currently, the supermarket chain is operated by two corporate groups owned by the founding Albrecht family: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. The company was split in 1961 following a disagreement between brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht over whether to sell cigarettes in their stores.

Why do families prefer to shop at Aldi?

The study conducted by Forbes compared the most popular retail chains among consumers, including Walmart,Costco, Target, Sam’s Club, and Amazon. It found that an average family of four can save up to 36% annually by purchasing Aldi’s private-label products instead of brands sold by other supermarket chains.

This translates into an average annual saving of about $1,869. Additionally, 76% of shoppers say Aldi’s private-label items offer the same quality as more expensive brands, but at significantly lower prices. The report also highlights that the chain has been able to keep its prices low due to its streamlined store model and its focus on essential products.

This strategy not only lowers operating costs but also allows customers to finish their shopping in under 30 minutes. By helping them avoid impulse buys and stick to their shopping lists, the company enables real and consistent savings.
