During Donald Trump’s first speech to Congress since his return to the presidency, Congressman Al Green was expelled from the chamber after interrupting the president. At 78 years old, the congressman stood up and waved his cane in protest against Trump’s speech, but his words were drowned out by the shouts of the Republican caucus.
House Speaker Mike Johnson immediately intervened to restore order. Johnson and Vice President JD Vance, who were seated behind Trump, stood up to call for calm in the chamber. However, the atmosphere became even more tense when Republicans began chanting “USA!” in contrast to the boos from the Democrats. Eventually, House staff escorted Green out of the chamber.
Who is Al Green?
Alexander N. Green, known as Al Green, is an American politician and attorney who has represented Texas’ 9th congressional district since 2005. Born on September 1, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Green is a member of the Democratic Party and has been a prominent figure in the fight for civil rights and social justice in the United States.
Before his congressional career, Green served as a justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas, for 26 years. His legal background and activism led him to run for the House of Representatives in 2004, where he secured a significant victory in District 9, a region with a predominantly African American and Latino population. Since then, he has been re-elected multiple times, establishing himself as an influential voice in national politics.
What has been Al Green’s role in Congress?
Since joining Congress, Al Green has focused his efforts on advocating for equitable housing access, fair employment practices, and the defense of minority rights. He has been a fierce critic of Republican policies that he considers harmful to vulnerable communities and has pushed for measures to improve the economic and social conditions of his district.
In 2017, Green introduced the first articles of impeachment against Trump, arguing that the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey constituted an abuse of power. In 2019, he again proposed impeachment, citing the then-president’s attacks on four Democratic congresswomen of color. Although his initiatives did not succeed, they cemented his reputation as a staunch opponent of the Republican administration.

Al Green, one of Donald Trump’s fiercest critics
Over the years, Al Green has been one of Donald Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress. He has repeatedly denounced what he sees as divisive rhetoric and policies that negatively impact minorities. In 2019, during a House Financial Services Committee hearing, Green questioned the CEOs of major banks about the lack of diversity in top management and the legacy of slavery in the U.S. financial system.
In 2024, he demonstrated his commitment to his principles by leaving the hospital in a wheelchair to vote against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This act prevented Republicans from securing the necessary votes to move forward with the impeachment process.
