National Croissant Day is celebrated every January 30th. It’s the perfect occasion to visit your favorite bakery or café and enjoy a freshly baked croissant, or even try making one at home.
What Does the Word “Croissant” Mean?
The word “croissant” comes from French and means “crescent”, referring to the crescent moon shape. This term reflects the original structure of the pastry, which is made from yeast dough and flavored with butter or margarine.
Where Was the Croissant Invented?
This bread has its roots in Austria, although its laminated version was perfected in France, from where it spread worldwide. Its origin dates back to the 17th century in Vienna, Austria, during the siege by the Ottoman Empire in 1683.
The Turkish troops were advancing through Europe, conquering territories of the Holy Roman Empire, and their next target was Vienna. The city was fortified, so the soldiers decided to dig underneath the walls.
To avoid being detected, they dug at night, but they were discovered by the bakers (the only ones working at those hours), who quickly alerted the soldiers, and the invasion was stopped.
As a celebration of the victory, the bakers created a bread shaped like a crescent moon, similar to the flag of Turkey, symbolizing “eating” the Turkish army.
What Are Other Names for the Croissant?
Croissant isn’t the only name for this pastry, as different countries have different terms for the crescent-shaped bun.
- Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela: cachitos
- Argentina and Chile: medialunas
- Mexico: cuernitos
- Rest of Latin America: cangrejitos
