"We are prepared", responds the president of Mexico to Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs

The Government of Mexico is prepared for the imposition of tariffs, said President Claudia Sheinbaum after US President Donald Trump announced that these will begin to be implemented as of Saturday, February 1.

Mexico Responds to Donald Trump on U.S. Tariffs

Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that there is already a plan in place to protect the Mexican economy in case Donald Trump imposes a 25% tariff on products from Mexico.

“We have plan A, plan B, plan C for whatever the U.S. government decides. It is very important that the people of Mexico know that we will always defend the dignity of our people, we will always defend respect for our sovereignty, and we will engage in dialogue as equals, as we have always said, without subordination,” she stated.

How U.S. Tariffs on Mexican Products Will Affect the U.S.

The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, affirmed that the decision by the Trump administration to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican products would represent a “strategic mistake,” as the primary victims would be companies and consumers in the United States.

According to the official, if this new tariff is applied, U.S. consumers would face higher prices in various sectors, from supermarkets to car dealerships.

“In supermarkets, everything from fruits, vegetables, meat, and beer. Cars and trucks at all dealerships and parts from major companies in the automotive industry; electronic products and appliances; medical equipment, which is also made here,” he said.

This impact, he added, will be greater in border states and cities with high consumption of Mexican products, such as California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona.

What Products Will Be Affected by U.S. Tariffs on Mexico?

According to the Secretary of Economy of Mexico, the imposition of tariffs by the United States will directly affect final products such as cars, computers, televisions, and refrigerators, which will inevitably increase in price.

“U.S. consumers will be affected: first, because the prices will be higher, meaning the price of all those products will rise by 25%. Second, because there will be less availability of products, because as you increase the price by 25%, the purchase will contract. And finally, there may be problems in supply chains because such high tariffs have an expansive impact,” he clarified.

He pointed out that the imposition of tariffs would have a significant impact on several industries. In the case of automobiles, it would affect 12 million U.S. families. In the computer sector, the impact would reach 40 million households, with an additional cost of more than 7 billion dollars. Meanwhile, 32 million families in the United States would have to pay over 2 billion extra dollars for televisions.

Additionally, he highlighted that one in three refrigerators sold in the U.S. is manufactured in Mexico, meaning this measure would impact at least 5 million families, generating an additional expense of nearly one billion dollars in a single day.

Which Companies Will Be Most Affected by U.S. Tariffs on Mexico?

Among the companies most affected by the imposition of U.S. tariffs on Mexico are:

  • Ford
  • Stellantis
  • General Motors

Why Does Donald Trump Want to Impose Tariffs on Mexico?

Before even taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump had insisted on imposing more tariffs on products entering the country, as for him, “the word ‘tariff’ is the prettiest word in the dictionary.”

These 25% tariffs would specifically target Mexico and Canada as a form of retaliation for the lack of measures to curb illegal migration to the United States. The measure was confirmed by Trump on Thursday, January 30, and will go into effect starting tomorrow, February 1.
