Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith Carter.
Carter was a prominent American politician and humanitarian, known for his commitment to peace and human rights. Before becoming President of the United States, he served as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and was a senator in the Georgia General Assembly from 1962 to 1966.
In 1981, Carter sought re-election as president but was defeated by Ronald Reagan.

Both the former President and his wife attended all their public education there. After a six-year restoration project, the building now houses the main visitor center of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.
- 1888 Depot: This was the headquarters of the 1976 presidential campaign.
- Childhood Farm: The farm where Jimmy Carter lived from 1928 to 1941. His father, Earl Carter, sold the property in 1949.
Visiting Hours for Plains Historic Sites
The Plains historic sites are open daily except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Their hours are as follows:
- Plains High School Museum: Open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Jimmy Carter’s 1976 Presidential Campaign Headquarters: Open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Childhood Farm: Open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
