History of Gatorade in the Super Bowl
The first Gatorade bath took place in 1985 when Jim Burt, a defensive tackle for the New York Giants, threw the sports drink on head coach Bill Parcells after a 17-3 victory over Washington.
However, it wasn’t a celebratory gesture as it would be today. Burt had endured constant criticism from Parcells during the week leading up to the game. After winning, he decided to get back at his coach by throwing Gatorade on him, something that, according to the defensive tackle, helped him avoid future reprimands from Parcells.
Since then, his teammate Harry Carson continued the tradition the following year, commenting that Parcells was superstitious and believed in these kinds of rituals.
