Netflix is one of the most popular streaming platforms in the world, with millions of subscribers who log in daily to watch their favorite content. But what do people prefer? Here are the most-watched movies and series on Netflix.
This Wednesday, Netflix released its semiannual Engagement Report, which includes about 99% of the total viewing time of titles on the platform during the period from July to December 2024. Here are the results.
What is the most-watched series on Netflix?
The second season of the South Korean phenomenon Squid Game topped the list of most-watched series, with over 86.5 million views globally.
In addition to the return of Squid Game, other standout series include the first season of the romantic comedy Nobody Wants This (56.8 million), the Norwegian production The Island (52.2 million), the fourth season of Emily in Paris (57.8 million), and the miniseries starring Nicole Kidman, The Perfect Couple (75.1 million).

In the film sector, the action genre stood out with US releases like Carry-On Luggage (137.3 million views), The Syndicate (131.1 million), and Rebel Ridge (129 million). Additionally, Christmas movies performed well, with standout performances from Lindsay Lohan’s recent film Our Little Secret (81.3 million), and the new animated adaptation of the children’s classic The Grinch (66.5 million).
Mexican movies and series triumph on Netflix
The report indicated that, in the second half of 2024, nearly one-third of all views were generated by stories in languages other than English. With over 41.2 million views, the first season of the Mexican drama Accidente has become the third most-watched series in a non-English language and holds the eighth spot in the global ranking of most-watched Netflix series by subscribers.
Other mexican productions such as The Secret of the River (16.8 million views), Las Hermanas Guerra (14.8 million), the second season of El Niñero (6.3 million), the action-comedy Non-Negotiable (20.3 million), and the new version of Pedro Páramo (7.7 million) also captured the attention of audiences worldwide.
The semiannual report also highlighted that people from nations like Bahrain, Croatia, Kenya, New Caledonia, and Venezuela appreciated productions that explore various facets of Mexican culture. These stories cover everything from Oaxaca’s muxe identity to the stunning natural beauty of Durango and Jalisco, to the magical realism present in one of the great classics of Mexican literature.
“2024 was a great year for local stories. All of these titles, which were watched both in and outside of Mexico, have very different formats, but they all focused on hyperlocal stories, filled with identity, and rooted in showing a much more authentic Mexico,” said Carolina Leconte, Vice President of Content for Netflix Mexico.
How many hours do Netflix users spend online?
According to Netflix’s latest Engagement Report, users of the platform were connected for over 94 billion hours in the second half of 2024, which represents a 5% increase from the previous year.
