Why do they want to ban the purchase of soda and junk food in the U.S.?
According to officials from Arkansas, Idaho, and Indiana, this proposal is part of the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) campaign. The initiative aims to promote healthier eating habits among Americans and reduce public spending on health issues related to poor nutrition.
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides support to individuals and families with low income so they can access healthy food. Each month, recipients receive funds deposited on an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, which they can use to buy groceries. Although SNAP is federally funded, it is administered by state agencies through local offices.

- Cigarettes or tobacco
- Vitamins, medicines, and supplements

How can I qualify for SNAP?
To qualify for SNAP benefits, your household must meet certain eligibility requirements. These are designed to ensure that assistance goes to those who truly need it. Even if you don’t have a permanent residence, you may still qualify. You don’t need a fixed address, a place to sleep, or a kitchen to prepare your meals. SNAP understands the challenges many vulnerable people face and aims to offer support during difficult times.
One of the key factors in determining eligibility is household income. Most applicants must meet both gross and net income limits. Gross income is the total amount your household earns before taxes or deductions. However, certain expenses can be deducted to help you qualify—these include rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, child support, and care expenses for dependents.
Additionally, if you or another member of your household is 60 or older, or receives disability benefits, you may deduct monthly out-of-pocket medical expenses that exceed $35, as long as they are not covered by insurance or another person outside the household. These deductions make it easier for households with specific needs to access the food assistance SNAP provides.
