Tesla loses buyers in Europe due to ties to Donald Trump

Musk, whose Department of Government Efficiency has moved swiftly to defund parts of the U.S. government, has simultaneously angered centrist and left-wing political factions in Europe with his support for far-right figures.

Tesla Faces Dramatic Sales Decline Across Europe as Elon Musk’s Political Stance Sparks Backlash. The electric vehicle (EV) industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, establishing itself as a key player in the transition toward more sustainable mobility. In 2022, global EV sales increased by 55 percent, reaching 10.5 million units and accounting for 13 percent of total global light vehicle sales, according to Statista.

In this context, China has positioned itself as the undisputed leader in EV adoption. In August 2024, EV sales in the country surpassed internal combustion vehicle sales for the first time, representing 54 percent of the automotive market. In contrast, Europe and the United States face challenges in achieving mass EV adoption. In Europe, the removal of subsidies in countries like Germany has led to a decline in electric vehicle sales. Meanwhile, in the United States, although EV sales increased between 2021 and 2023, affordability remains a major obstacle to sustained growth.

Tesla Losing Buyers in Europe

Musk, whose Department of Government Efficiency has moved swiftly to defund parts of the U.S. government, has simultaneously angered centrist and left-wing political factions in Europe with his support for far-right figures.

As a result, Tesla has suffered severe losses in traditionally strong European markets. Sales in France plummeted 63 percent in January compared to the same month last year. In Germany, the drop was nearly as steep, with sales falling 59.5 percent, according to the company’s own reported data.

Analysts have pointed to growing resistance against Musk, particularly after his apparent endorsement of the far-right Alternative for Germany party. This marks Tesla’s weakest January sales performance in Germany since 2021.

The company’s struggles are not limited to continental Europe. In the UK, Tesla sales have also declined, while Scandinavian markets—where EV adoption has been widespread—are experiencing similar trends.

Musk is also stirring political controversy in the UK by advocating for the release of far-right activist Tommy Robinson from prison. It is worth noting that Robinson is serving a sentence for violating a court order and has a history of legal troubles, including previous imprisonment for assault and contempt of court.

Perhaps most concerning for Tesla is the slowdown in China, one of its most critical markets. January sales dropped 11.5 percent compared to the previous year, while local competitor BYD reported an increase of nearly 50 percent in sales.

Tesla’s stock has been under pressure. On Tuesday morning, shares were trading at around $350, a significant drop from their December peak of approximately $480. Over the past month, Tesla’s stock has declined by 13 percent, although it remains up more than 86 percent over the past 12 months.
