Subway’s History
In 1965, Fred DeLuca dreamed of becoming a doctor. To fund his studies, with an initial loan of $1,000, his friend Dr. Peter Buck suggested opening a submarine sandwich shop, which led to a partnership that would transform the fast-food industry.
The first location opened in August 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Their goal was to open 32 restaurants in a decade. Over time, Fred gained business management knowledge, learning the importance of offering high-quality products, providing excellent customer service, keeping operational costs low, and choosing the best locations for their shops.
By 1974, Fred and Peter owned and operated 16 sandwich shops in Connecticut. Realizing they wouldn’t reach their goal of 32 locations, they decided to franchise and launched the Subway brand, starting an incredible expansion that continues to this day. Since then, the company has become the largest submarine sandwich chain in the world, with over 40,000 locations.
