Why is it called the Super Bowl?
In 1960, the United States had two professional American football leagues: the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL). In 1967, both leagues decided to compete in a game to determine the overall champion, with the teams finishing first in each league’s tournament.
Originally, this game was called the “First AFL-NFL World Championship Game.” However, three years later, the two leagues merged to form the current NFL. In 1970, the tournament’s name was changed to “Super Bowl” at the suggestion of Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The idea came from the fact that his son played with a toy called the “Super Ball”; Hunt decided to replace “Ball” with “Bowl,” referring to the trophy used in college football championships.
