How will the Starlink internet service work on Apple iPhones? Which iPhone models will be compatible?

Starlink is the satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk. Since its launch in 2019, the company has revolutionized global connectivity by offering internet access in remote areas with limited traditional telecommunications coverage.

Until recently, the Starlink service required a special antenna to connect. However, with the introduction of Direct to Cell technology, compatible mobile phones will be able to connect directly to the Starlink satellite network without the need for additional hardware.

How to get Starlink internet on an iPhone?

Currently, the service is in the beta phase in the United States through T-Mobile, but it is expected to reach other countries in the coming months. If you’re in the U.S., you can sign up for T-Mobile’s beta program to test the free connection before its commercial launch in July.

  • Free Beta Phase: Available until July 2025 for T-Mobile users with eSIM.
  • Paid Plans:
    • T-Mobile Go5G Next: Service included at no additional cost.
    • Other T-Mobile customers: $15 USD per month.
    • AT&T and Verizon users: $20 USD per month via a secondary eSIM.

Which phones are compatible with Starlink?

Although most information revolves around connectivity for Apple iPhones, other devices will also have access to the service.

To connect to Starlink, the phone must be compatible with LTE Band 25 and have eSIM. Some of the confirmed models are:

  • iPhone 14 and later (including Plus, Pro, and Pro Max models).
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 and later.
  • Google Pixel 9 and newer versions.
  • Motorola Edge and Razr 2024 onwards.

The list will expand as the beta progresses and the service expands globally.

Where will Starlink be available in LATAM?

Although the beta started in the United States, countries such as Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and Japan could be the next to receive the technology. In Latin America, SpaceX has signed agreements with Entel to implement Starlink in Chile and Peru.

SpaceX plans to launch more satellites with Direct to Cell technology in the coming months. By the end of 2025, the service is expected to be available in more countries worldwide.

What are the current service limitations?

For now, Starlink for mobile phones only allows text messaging. Voice calls and internet browsing will be available in future updates, according to SpaceX.

Additionally, devices must have an eSIM and the latest version of their operating system to connect.

Will Starlink replace conventional mobile networks?

Not for now. Starlink Direct to Cell is designed to complement terrestrial coverage, not replace it. It is ideal for rural areas or emergency situations, but in cities, you will still rely on traditional networks.

How does Starlink bring internet to mobile phones?

Starlink has launched satellites equipped with “Direct to Cell” technology, meaning they function as telecommunications towers in space. Instead of relying on terrestrial infrastructure, these satellites can provide internet coverage and phone signals anywhere with a clear view of the sky.

The system works as follows:

  1. Automatic connection: When a user is in an area without traditional coverage, their phone will automatically search for the Starlink signal.
  2. Laser links between satellites: The phone’s signal is transmitted to the nearest satellite, which then relays it to another satellite and finally to a ground station connected to the global internet network.
  3. Use of standard LTE: The satellites are equipped with LTE technology so that mobile phones can connect as if they were using a conventional mobile network.
