A earthquake struck San Diego County, California, early Monday morning, startling residents and drawing swift attention across social media platforms. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic event registered a magnitude of 5.2 and occurred at 10:08 a.m. Pacific Time. The epicenter was located approximately 2 miles (about 4 kilometers) south of Julian, a small rural community in the mountains of eastern San Diego County.
Although the quake was initially recorded as a magnitude 6, USGS scientists later revised the data after reviewing additional seismic readings. The earthquake was relatively shallow, increasing the likelihood of it being strongly felt at the surface, and shaking was reported as far as Los Angeles, Orange County, Temecula, and even Tijuana, Mexico.

Where Was the Earthquake Felt in California?
The shaking was reported throughout much of Southern California. Residents in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange counties received mobile alerts warning them to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” as emergency services closely monitored the situation. Some people in the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley also experienced noticeable tremors.
One of the most surprising aspects of Monday’s earthquake was the timing — it occurred shortly after Weekend 1 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, when thousands of attendees were beginning their return home. Several festivalgoers reported feeling the quake while packing their cars or checking out of accommodations.

Were There Any Injuries or Damage From the Earthquake in San Diego?
As of Monday afternoon, no injuries or significant structural damage had been reported. “There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage,” confirmed the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office in a public statement. Similarly, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services noted that they were coordinating with local agencies to assess any potential impacts across the region.
The National Weather Service office in San Diego also confirmed that there is “no tsunami expected” as a result of the earthquake, given its inland location.

Are There Aftershocks Following the San Diego Earthquake?
Yes, multiple aftershocks followed the initial tremor. USGS data confirmed that at least seven aftershocks were recorded in the area within hours of the main quake. These secondary quakes, which typically occur as the Earth’s crust adjusts to the new stress distribution, are expected to continue in the coming days. While most aftershocks are smaller than the main event, they can still be disruptive, especially in communities already shaken by the initial quake.
People Capture the San Diego Earthquake on Video
One of the most defining features of this earthquake was the real-time sharing of videos across social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Footage from home security systems, surveillance cameras, and even personal smartphones quickly went viral, showing the exact moment buildings began to rattle, car alarms sounded, and pets reacted to the sudden movement.
In one widely shared clip, a family dining in their kitchen can be seen pausing in fear as glasses clatter and light fixtures sway above them. In another, a store’s CCTV captured shelves trembling and small products toppling to the ground.
These videos have been invaluable not only for public awareness but also for seismologists who analyze visual data to understand how different structures and areas responded to the quake. As one user posted, “You can’t imagine how loud the rumble was — and then everything just started shaking like crazy.”
