An iconic Christmas special is returning to the network that first aired it, exactly 60 years after its debut. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will return to NBC this Friday, December 6th, marking its first time back on the network’s screen since the 1970s.
What is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer about?
Since its debut in 1964, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has aired every year, making it the longest-running continuous holiday TV special in the United States.
Created by Rankin/Bass Productions, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer originally premiered on NBC in 1964. The film is based on a 1930s poem by Robert L. May and the famous 1940s song by Johnny Marks.
The story follows Rudolph (voiced by Billie Mae Richards) and Hermy (voiced by Paul Soles), an elf who dreams of becoming a dentist—two characters who feel like misfits. Together, they run away from the North Pole and meet characters like Yukon Cornelius (voiced by Larry Mann), a gold prospector, Bumble, the fearsome Abominable Snowman (voiced by Bernard Cowan), and the misfit toys. The narration is provided by Burl Ives, who voices Sam the Snowman.
