Origin of the Pasadena Rose Parade
The first Rose Parade was organized by the members of the Valley Hunt Club, who wanted to showcase that California, unlike other regions of the United States, enjoys a warm and spring-like climate even in the middle of winter.
To do so, they decided to host a parade before the Rose Bowl Game, a college football game between NCAA Division teams held at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

The original purpose of the parade was for participants to decorate their carriages with colorful flowers, symbolizing how California blossoms while other states suffer from winter’s chill.
Over the years, this tradition has remained alive at the start of each year. Today, in addition to the floral floats, marching bands, cheerleading groups, and nonprofit organizations participate, but horses, traditional costumes, and, of course, the flower-adorned floats remain essential parts of the parade.
Each year, judges award prizes to three floats: the best designed, the most impressive bloom, and the most entertaining.
