For over 75 years, the U.S. Army has fostered a unique dual career path, shaping Soldiers not only for the battlefield but also for Olympic glory. This year, a diverse and talented group of 10 Soldier-athletes will continue this proud tradition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. These Soldier-athletes, serving in various components of the Army—Active Duty, National Guard, and Army Reserve—exemplify the best of both military and athletic prowess.
The U.S. Army’s commitment to sports is not just about competition; it’s about representing American values of dedication, discipline, and teamwork on the global stage. Over the decades, more than 600 Soldier-athletes have competed in the Games, contributing significantly to the U.S. Army’s haul of over 120 medals in various disciplines.
Since its inception, the Army’s sports programs have developed Soldiers who can perform under both the pressures of military duty and world-class competition, accruing over 120 medals in various Olympic sports along the way.
The Training Grounds: WCAP and USAMU
Central to the Army’s sports success are the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU). Located in Fort Carson, Colorado, WCAP supports Soldier-athletes who aim to balance their military careers with competitive sports at an international level.
Meanwhile, USAMU hones the marksmanship skills of its members, many of whom have gone on to represent the U.S. in shooting events across the globe.
