When did the NFL Draft start?
The first NFL Draft took place in February 1936 at a hotel in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Eagles had the first pick and selected Jay Berwanger, Heisman Trophy winner and University of Chicago player. That year, 81 players were selected, but only 24 ended up playing in the NFL. It wasn’t until 1967, after the merger agreement between the NFL and the American Football League (AFL), that the modern unified Draft era officially began.
