What is Pi?
The number Pi, commonly represented as 3.1416, is an infinite number. It is defined as the ratio between the circumference of a circle (the distance around it) and its diameter (the distance through its center). This ratio remains constant regardless of the size of the circle: from the edge of a soup can to the equator of a planet, the result is always Pi.
According to the Guinness World Records, the most precise known value of Pi has exceeded 62 trillion digits.
Why is National Pi Day celebrated?
The idea to celebrate Pi Day originated with physicist Larry Shaw, who worked at the San Francisco Museum of Science in California. In 1988, Shaw proposed March 14th as a way to honor mathematics and promote its study worldwide.
Over time, the celebration grew in popularity, and by 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives officially declared March 14th as National Pi Day.
