In the midst of April Fools Day, McDonald’s decided to welcome April with something very different from what’s usually expected at this time of year. Far from the classic April 1st jokes, the world’s most famous restaurant chain is fully embracing complete transparency.
Their new campaign “April Facts,” an initiative to share what really happens behind the McDonald’s menu and how its products travel from the farm to the restaurant.
McDonald’s and its “April Facts”
This April 1, McDonald’s chose to reveal real facts about what millions of people consume every day. “On a day when everyone is focused on pranks, we thought we’d serve up facts, starting with what’s really on the menu at every McDonald’s across the country,” said Michael Gonda, Senior Vice President and Chief Impact Officer of McDonald’s North America.
This communication strategy aligns with a growing trend in the food industry: transparency. In McDonald’s case, the goal is to reach more than 26 million Americans who eat at this chain every day.

What ingredients does McDonald’s use in its burgers and other products?
McDonald’s stated that in recent years it has sought to eliminate artificial ingredients. Its classic burgers—like the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with cheese, and McDouble—are made with beef, free of preservatives, colorings, or artificial flavors. “All we add is a pinch of salt and pepper,” the brand assured.
Chicken McNuggets have also evolved: the brand claimed they are made with 100% chicken breast and without artificial preservatives. The same goes for the Egg McMuffin, which contains a 100% cage-free egg, cracked fresh in each restaurant and cooked with real butter.
As for the Filet-O-Fish, McDonald’s reported that it is made with Alaskan Pollock, responsibly sourced from certified fisheries.
Where do McDonald’s menu ingredients come from?
McDonald’s emphasizes the origin of its ingredients, working with U.S. and local suppliers to ensure freshness and traceability.
For example, the potatoes used in its famous fries come from varieties such as Russet Burbank and Umatilla, grown by American farmers. And the apples in Happy Meals are from varieties like Gala and Empire.
“Our customers trust us to provide real food with real ingredients,” explained César Piña, the company’s Chief Supply Chain Officer. “Our secret sauce is great taste, great quality, and great value, and we achieve that every day with the help of amazing farmers and suppliers.”
Which companies supply McDonald’s in the United States?
The chain has built strong, long-standing relationships with its suppliers. Some have been working with the brand for over 50 years. Notable examples include:
- Golden State Foods and OSI Group, responsible for supplying beef since the company’s earliest days.
- Forsman Farms and Cargill, key to achieving the U.S. cage-free egg goal two years ahead of schedule.
- Bama Companies, a woman-led business that has produced McDonald’s pies since 1968.
