Why is Macy’s closing its stores?

The department store chain announced several months ago that it is facing financial difficulties. As part of a recovery strategy, Macy’s has begun reducing the number of its stores, focusing particularly on underperforming locations.

These closures are part of the “A Bold New Chapterstrategy, which aims to drive sustainable and profitable sales growth for the company. This includes the closure of around 150 underperforming stores over three years, while investing in the 350 Macy’s stores that are in the process of closing by fiscal 2026.

When will the stores close?

So far, the company has not given an exact date for the closure of its underperforming stores in 2025; however, it has stated that liquidation began in January and will last approximately 8 to 12 weeks. For Macy’s Backstage and Macy’s Furniture Galleries, the liquidations started in February and will last about 6 weeks, meaning the closures are expected to occur between April and May.
