Kanye West Self-Proclaims as a Nazi

A few days ago, the singer used his official social media accounts to post messages in which he self-proclaimed as a Nazi and declared himself a fan of Adolf Hitler, which caused a stir among his followers and the general public.

“I’m a Nazi,” “I love Hitler,” “Hitler was so cool,” and “I will never apologize for my Jewish comments. I can say whatever I want,” were some of the posts.

After a flood of negative comments, the rapper’s social media accounts, like X, were deleted.

What is the Swastika?

The term swastika comes from the Sanskrit word svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being.” It is a hook-shaped cross.

History of the Swastika

The swastika symbol appeared in the late 19th century after the extensive research of famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered the hook-shaped cross at the site of ancient Troy. Schliemann linked it to similar forms found on pottery in Germany and suggested it was an “important religious symbol of our ancient ancestors.”

In the early 20th century, the swastika was a common symbol in Europe, used with various meanings. The most frequent was as a good luck emblem and omen. However, the völkisch movements soon appropriated it, viewing it as a symbol of “Aryan identity” and German nationalist pride.

This theory about the cultural Aryan ancestry of the German people was probably one of the main reasons the Nazi Party adopted the swastika, or Hakenkreuz (in German, “hook cross”), as its official symbol in 1920.

What does the Swastika mean for the Nazis?

The Nazis believed that the early Aryans of India, from whose Vedic heritage the swastika originates, represented the model of white race invaders, appropriating this symbol as an emblem of white supremacy.

Why is the Swastika banned?

Although the swastika has ancient origins, its close association with Nazi Germany has made its use controversial today, as it is often perceived as a symbol of hate.

Many images from the Holocaust era are now identified by their connection to the genocide. The presence and relevance of these visual icons reflect:

  • The horror still evoked by the crimes committed during the Holocaust.
  • A persistent fascination with Nazi symbolism and propaganda.

What Nazi symbols are banned?

The German Penal Code establishes the prohibition of using flags, emblems, uniforms, slogans, songs, and salutes associated with Nazism. Additionally, the symbols of legal organizations and parties that resemble those of groups or associations that do not respect the constitution are also banned.

The banned Nazi symbols include:

  • The swastika cross
  • Images of Adolf Hitler
  • The SS victory runes
  • The “Hitler salute”
  • The Celtic cross of the proscribed Socialist Popular Movement-Workers’ Party
  • The Command Triangle of the German Youth Federation
  • The decorations of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party
  • The Führer’s standards
  • The war flags of the Third Reich
  • The Blood Order
  • The SS daggers
  • The skinhead insignia with runes
