. While the company did not provide extensive information on the fixes, it indicated that the update resolved the issues, which were identified as CVE-2023-28205 and CVE-2023-28206. Apple’s security page lists recent releases, but it does not disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until patches or updates are available.
The first vulnerability, CVE-2023-28205, was described by security firm Sophos as a “hole in WebKit” that could allow a compromised website to take control of an affected browser or app that uses WebKit to display HTML content. Apple’s own Safari browser is vulnerable, as are other browsers and apps that use WebKit. CVE-2023-28206, the second vulnerability, involves a security hole in IOSurfaceAccelerator that could enable an app to execute code with kernel privileges, potentially allowing an attacker to target the core of iOS if the vulnerability is not patched.
According to Sophos and other security researchers, users should update their Apple devices that use iOS 16.4 as soon as possible. Apple acknowledged on its website that it was “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited” in both cases.
