Google launches AI Mode, its new search engine with Artificial Intelligence

Google has made it clear that AI Mode is just the beginning of a new era in AI-powered search

Google took another step in the evolution of its search engine by introducing AI Mode, a new AI-powered search mode that expands the capabilities of AI Overviews. This development responds to the growing demand from users for more detailed and contextual answers in their searches.

Backed by Gemini 2.0, AI Mode enhances the accuracy and depth of responses, allowing users to explore complex topics without needing to conduct multiple searches.

“The goal and vision of AI Mode is to give users the ability to search for anything effortlessly,” said Robby Stein, Vice President of Product at Google Search.

The launch of AI Mode also addresses the increasing competition in the field of AI-powered searches. OpenAI has gained ground with its ChatGPT Search, which allows users to get detailed answers without needing to log in. Google aims to maintain its leadership by offering a more integrated and connected alternative within its ecosystem of services.

According to Google, more and more users are adding “AI” at the end of their searches to get AI-generated results. AI Mode aims to meet this need natively within Google’s search engine.

How does AI Mode work?

This feature uses an advanced approach called “query fan-out“, which executes multiple searches simultaneously across different subtopics and data sources. This allows for more in-depth responses by cross-referencing information from various sources, including Knowledge Graph and real-time databases.

Google has explained that this technology is particularly useful for queries that require comparative analysis or detailed explorations. For example, if a user asks: “What are the differences in sleep tracking features between a smart ring, a smartwatch, and a monitoring mat?”, AI Mode will break down the key features and provide links for further information.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

While AI Overviews already offered AI-powered summaries in search results, AI Mode takes this experience to the next level by enabling more advanced interactions and providing more detailed responses. The main difference lies in its ability to reason, analyze, and present information in a much more structured and visually enriched way.

Additionally, AI Mode emphasizes transparency in the sources of its responses, clearly displaying where the information is sourced from—something that addresses past criticisms about the lack of attribution in earlier versions of AI Overviews.

How to use Google’s new AI-powered search?

For now, AI Mode is available in the United States and is part of an experiment under Google Labs. Access is limited to users subscribed to Google One AI Premium, though the company has not confirmed a global rollout date.

This launch follows the same pattern as AI Overviews, which was initially introduced in limited regions before expanding worldwide.
