Google Doodle revives iconic game to celebrate Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year has arrived, and everyone is celebrating this date, including Google, which launched a new themed doodle that lets you relive one of the most iconic arcade games of all time. Here’s what the new Google doodle is about and how to play it.

What is the new Google doodle for Chinese New Year?

Google welcomed the Year of the Wood Snake, which began this Wednesday, January 29. To mark the occasion, it introduced a doodle that leads to an interactive game that you probably know very well and played during your childhood: the Snake game.

This classic game was first released in the mid-1970s and became popular with the arrival of Nokia mobile phones. Now, Google decided to revive the nostalgia and brought this arcade back so you can play it as many times as you want.

The Google doodle features an illustration in orange, yellow, and red tones, traditional colors of the Chinese New Year celebration. In the center, there’s an image of a snake with a mandarin on its head, which loops around the letters that form the word “Google.”

What is the objective of the Snake game?

The snake must eat the mandarins that appear in its path, but without crashing into the walls! If it touches any of the edges, the game ends. Keep in mind that with every mandarin the snake eats, it will grow longer, so it will become more and more challenging to avoid crashing into its own tail.

One variation included in this Google doodle is that the player can customize not only the snake’s color but also the fruit it eats, the speed at which it moves, and the game’s scenery.

How to play the Snake doodle on Google?

To play, simply go to Google, click on the doodle, and press the “Play” button. Once the game starts, use the arrow keys to move and try to capture as many items as possible.

What hidden games are there on Google?

Over time, Google has designed numerous doodles, some of which include games and challenges, both single-player and multiplayer. Many of these are still available, though not many people know about them.

To access them, you just need to search for the game’s name along with the word “Google.” Here are some of the available games:

  • Pac-man
  • Minesweeper
  • Bingo
  • Block Breaker
  • Tic-tac-toe
  • Solitaire

What is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon rather than the sun. Because of this, its date changes each year, typically falling between late January and mid-February.

Each Lunar New Year is associated with one of the 12 zodiac animals and one of the five traditional elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water), together forming a 60-year cycle.

What animal is the 2025 Lunar New Year?

2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake.

What does the Year of the Wood Snake symbolize?

The snake is the sixth sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle of 12 years and represents attributes like wisdom, mystery, introspection, and elegance.

In 2025, under the influence of wood as the primary element, the Wood Snake will enhance growth, resilience, and a future-focused vision. It will be a year conducive to personal development, strengthening relationships, and planning long-term goals, favoring deep reflection and more conscious decision-making.
