More than 10,000 families have been evacuated following a fierce fire in Palisades, California, United States, which is fueled by strong winds affecting the region. This fire adds to two others that are active in the area.

Due to the emergency, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, while firefighters continue to battle the fire, which has become uncontrollable and has burned nearly 3,000 acres between the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu.

When Did the Fires Start in California?

The Palisades fire (the largest of the three fires reported in Los Angeles County) broke out around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Almost simultaneously, a second fire, known as Hurst, started in Sylmar, located in the San Fernando Valley, northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Later, around 6:30 p.m., the Eaton fire originated in Altadena, near Pasadena.

How Did the California Fires Start in 2025?

According to Cal Fire, there are three possible causes for these fires: low humidity, dry vegetation, and strong winds. The area received very little rainfall during the wet season; moreover, the strong wind gusts present in the region are conducive to the development of fires, warned the Los Angeles weather service.

Deaths from Fires in California 2025

The devastating fires have not only destroyed thousands of trees and grasslands but have also been responsible for the deaths of two civilians in the Eaton fire. Additionally, a significant number of people have been injured, and more than 100 structures have been destroyed by the flames.

Which Roads Are Closed Due to Fires in California?

The flames have blocked several major roads and highways in Southern California, causing large stretches to be closed. Some of the closed routes are:

  • Pacific Coast Highway, at Cross Creek Road and McClure Tunnel.
  • Interstate 10, near Lincoln Boulevard.
  • State Route 27.
  • Interstate 5 eastbound.
  • I-210 eastbound.
  • State Route 14.

On Wednesday, 19 school districts in Los Angeles County reported the closure of schools due to the wildfires. Others opted to continue classes online, though many students had to evacuate their homes.

Palisades Fire Reaches Getty Villa Museum

During the fire in Pacific Palisades, the flames reached the vicinity of the Getty Villa. According to firefighters, trees and vegetation were burning as the fire advanced toward the buildings. However, the museum assured that both the Villa and its art collections are safe.

This luxurious neighborhood is home to huge mansions occupied by some of the most recognized Hollywood celebrities. The fire in Palisades has already reached some of the mansions, forcing celebrities to evacuate the area.

In this exclusive neighborhood, Ben Affleck owns a 575-square-meter mansion valued at approximately $20.6 million. Tom Hanks, for his part, bought a 1,300-square-meter residence in 2010 for around $26 million.

Pacific Palisades is also home to the Getty Villa, a Roman-style mansion built in 1974 by billionaire Jean Paul Getty. This property is part of the museum that exhibits collections of Greek and Roman art, gathered by the magnate since the 1930s.
