Father’s Day 2024: Why is it Celebrated on June 16th?

Many countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, will celebrate Father's Day 2024 on Sunday, June 16th. But why this specific date?

Father’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, is observed on different dates around the world.

In 2024, many countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, will celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16th. But why this specific date?

History of Father’s Day

The tradition of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the establishment of Mother’s Day, sought to create a similar holiday to honor fathers.

She proposed the idea to her local church and community leaders in Spokane, Washington, initially suggesting her father’s birthday, June 5th, as the date for the celebration. However, the third Sunday in June was ultimately chosen to allow more time for preparation.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. While it gained popularity in subsequent years, it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon officially declared Father’s Day a national holiday in the United States, to be celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.

Father’s Day Around the World

The date of Father’s Day varies in other countries. For example, in many Catholic European countries, it is celebrated on March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is considered the patron saint of fathers. In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5th, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Celebrating Father’s Day

Regardless of the specific date, Father’s Day serves as a reminder to appreciate and express gratitude for the fathers and father figures in our lives. It is a day to celebrate their love, support, and guidance, and to recognize the important role they play in families and communities.

This Father’s Day, take a moment to honor the fathers in your life. Whether it’s through a heartfelt card, a thoughtful gift, or simply spending quality time together, let them know how much they mean to you.
