Family Dollar stores closing list 2024: Everything you need to know

The company anticipates the closure of 1000 Family Dollar stores. The firm revealed that 600 stores are set to close in 2024

Family Dollar is joining the ranks of retailers closing stores across the United States. According to a statement from its parent company, Dollar Tree, the company will shut down approximately 1,000 stores nationwide over the coming years. CEO Rick Dreiling attributed the closures to rising inflation and the reduction in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits by state governments.

The Economic Impact

“Persistent inflation and reduced government benefits continue to pressure low-income consumers, who make up a considerable portion of Family Dollar’s customer base,” Dreiling stated during a call with analysts, as reported by CNN.

This announcement comes weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fined the company following the discovery of a rodent infestation two years ago in about 400 stores. “The inspection found live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decomposition, rodent feces and urine, evidence of rodent nesting, and rodent odors throughout the facility, dead birds and bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against contamination,” the agency said in a statement.

In 2015, Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar for $8.5 billion, hoping to join forces and boost its customer base. However, the merger has not paid off as expected, with competitors like Dollar General taking away customers. Dollar General’s success is largely attributed to its locations in rural areas, where people tend to shop for low-priced products. Following the announcement of the closures, Dollar Tree’s shares fell by 13%.
