During a routine inspection at the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center, located in Culiacán, Sinaloa, authorities from various levels of government carried out a seizure that has caused a stir: a Starlink satellite internet system, a company owned by business magnate Elon Musk.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, was led by the State Public Security Secretariat (SSPE), in coordination with the State Preventive Police, members of the Mexican Army, agents of the National Guard, the Navy Secretariat, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

The inspection did not uncover firearms, but other prohibited items were found, including bottles of alcohol, a machete, a knife, two pairs of scissors, three screwdrivers, and two hammers. However, what caught the most attention from authorities was the presence of a modem and a Starlink satellite internet system inside the prison.

The discovery comes just days after the Tesla CEO mocked President Claudia Sheinbaum’s response to accusations of government ties with drug trafficking.

What is Starlink and how does it work?

Starlink is a satellite internet system developed by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space exploration company. It consists of a network of low-orbit satellites that provide high-speed internet access in remote areas or places with limited connectivity.

According to Starlink’s official website, the service allows for streaming, online gaming, video calls, and remote work. Currently, Starlink offers plans for both individual users and businesses, with prices ranging from 800 to 114,186 Mexican pesos per month, depending on coverage and service type.

Starlink’s technology is based on a constellation of small satellites orbiting the Earth at a low altitude. Users can access the service through an antenna that connects to these satellites and transmits the internet signal to ground stations. The data transmission process happens in fractions of a second, enabling a fast and stable connection.

Starlink Mini in Mexico

Starlink continues to expand its presence in the Mexican market. Recently, Elon Musk’s company launched the new Starlink Mini kit, a compact and portable device priced at 4,999 Mexican pesos. This new system is designed to provide high-speed connection anywhere, making it an attractive option for people who need internet on the go.

The arrival of Starlink Mini could further facilitate internet access in rural or underserved areas. However, it also presents a challenge in terms of regulation and security, especially in penitentiary contexts where internet access could pose risks.
