According to an estimate by Bloomberg News, Elon Musk’s net worth has surpassed $400 billion, making him the first person to reach this historic figure.

While the value of shares in Musk’s electric vehicle company Tesla and his robotics group have soared in recent months, it is Musk’s private stake in SpaceX, the rocket company he helped found, that has propelled his wealth beyond the latest threshold.

This week, Bloomberg reported that a private sale of SpaceX shares increased the company’s market capitalization to approximately $350 billion, making it the most valuable private startup in the world. Musk is said to own 42% of the company.

With Tesla’s stock reaching a new all-time high this Wednesday, Musk’s fortune grew to about $440 billion.

How did Elon Musk become a billionaire?

Musk’s journey to success was not easy, as his childhood in South Africa was full of challenges, including a complicated relationship with his father.

At the age of 17, after refusing to serve in the military and with no financial support from his father to continue his studies, Musk chose to move to Canada, where he obtained citizenship thanks to his mother.

Initially, he got a job as a cleaner in the boiler room of a sawmill, earning $18 a week.

Later, Musk received a scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in economics and physics. He then moved to Silicon Valley, where he founded his first company, focused on creating maps and guides for online newspapers. This venture was sold for $300 million, enabling him to continue advancing in his career.

In 1997, Musk founded X.com, a payment system that later became PayPal. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion, of which Elon Musk received around $165 million.

With that money, Musk went on to found Tesla, SpaceX, and other companies such as Neuralink and XAI.
