Is Taiwan Part of China or Not?

The complex political situation of Taiwan has resurfaced with the recent earthquake that struck the island. The question of whether Taiwan is the property of China or an independent state remains a complex issue with far-reaching geopolitical implications.

China’s Position

  • The People’s Republic of China (PRC) considers Taiwan to be a rebellious province that must be “reunified” with the mainland under the principle of “One China.”
  • The PRC has intensified its military and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan in recent years, aiming to achieve “peaceful reunification.”

  • The majority of Taiwanese reject the idea of “reunification” with China and prefer to maintain the status quo.
  • Taiwan has developed a strong economy and a vibrant democracy, making it a model of success in the region.

International Community’s Position

  • The international community is divided on Taiwan’s status.
  • Most countries do not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent state but maintain unofficial relations with the island.
  • The United States has expressed its commitment to defending Taiwan’s security and has sold weapons to the island to deter China from any military action.
