After Donald Trump resumed the presidency of the United States and returned to the White House, a well-known and controversial artifact also made its way back to the Oval Office: the Diet Coke button.
Prior to last Monday’s inauguration, the Oval Office was refurbished to be immediately ready for Trump, who signed various executive orders there that same day. During these events, the Diet Coke button was spotted. But what is it, and what is it used for? Let us explain.
What is the Diet Coke button?
The Oval Office was redecorated with elements similar to those present during Donald Trump’s first term (2017–2020), including a portrait of former President George Washington, a bust of Winston Churchill, and the infamous Diet Coke button.
The button, located on Trump’s desk, was once mistaken for a nuclear button (according to the Republican). However, it is nothing more than a device used by the president to request Diet Coke, his favorite soda.

Fred Trump Jr., an airline pilot, passed away in 1981 at the age of 43 in Queens, New York, due to a heart attack linked to alcoholism. Since then, Trump has avoided both alcohol and tobacco, a decision influenced by the profound impact of his brother’s loss.

Donald Trump currently uses the Resolute desk in the Oval Office. Of the six desks that have been part of the room, the Resolute has spent the most time there, having been used by eight presidents throughout history.
What’s special about the Resolute desk?
The original desk was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1879. The first note written on it by President Hayes was a message of gratitude to historian George Bancroft, in which he wrote: “It is a great pleasure to me to say that I write this in the first note written on the desk made from the timbers of the Resolute, sent by Queen Victoria to the President.”
The desk was constructed from the timbers of the British Arctic exploration ship HMS Resolute after its decommissioning and was presented to the President of the United States by the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as a symbol of courtesy and affectionate generosity.
