Dia de los Muertos: What day is Day of the Dead for Dogs?

Although there is no official date to celebrate the Day of the Dead for pets, the important thing is to remember them with love and joy on this special occasion

The Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos, deeply rooted in Mexican culture, has evolved over time, incorporating various aspects and meanings. While traditionally focused on honoring our deceased loved ones, more and more people want to pay tribute to their deceased pets in this celebration. However, the question that arises is when should we prepare the Day of the Dead altar for our pets.

The essence of the Day of the Dead lies in remembering and celebrating those who are no longer with us physically. In this context, our pets, who become part of our family and close companions, also deserve to be remembered in this festival.

When is the Day of the Dead?

The Day of the Dead is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, according to the Catholic calendar.

However, there is no official date to commemorate our pets on this special day. Various animal welfare associations have proposed alternative dates, such as October 27th or November 3rd, to remember dogs and cats on the Day of the Dead.

In 2019, the mexican pet funeral service company, Funeral Pet, proposed November 3rd as the Day of the Dead for pets, while in 2020, some suggested October 27th as an appropriate date for this commemoration.

Some people choose to set up the altar for their pets on November 1st, the day when children are remembered in the tradition of the Day of the Dead. The reason behind this choice is that they consider the souls of animals to possess a purity similar to that of children.

Day of the Dead for Pets 2023

Although there is no official date to celebrate the Day of the Dead for pets, the important thing is to remember them with love and joy on this special occasion.

However, Petco, the chain of pet products and animal welfare stores, has already cleared the doubt by marking October 27th as the Day of the Dead for pets on its October calendar of observances.

Fundamentally, beyond the exact date, the Day of the Dead altar for dogs and cats should reflect the love and affection we feel for them.

Elements of the Day of the Dead altar for pets

Make sure to include meaningful elements such as kibble or their favorite food, treats, favorite toys, and a photograph of your pet. These are the essential items for a Day of the Dead offering dedicated to our beloved pets.

In addition to these specific elements for pets, do not forget to incorporate the traditional elements of the celebration, such as marigold flowers, papel picado (cut paper), salt, candles, incense, and water.

Remembering our pets on the Day of the Dead is a beautiful way to honor their memory and the special bond we shared with them. While the date may vary, the love and affection we feel for our furry companions remain constant, making the Day of the Dead a fitting occasion to celebrate their lives.
