Dell has confirmed that customer information, including names, addresses, and order details, has been stolen from one of its online portals. While the hacker claims to have compromised 49 million records, which are now for sale on the dark web, Dell has not disclosed the exact number of affected individuals by the data breach.
Dell data breach 2024: Types of Data Compromised
According to Dell, the compromised data includes basic customer information like names, physical addresses, and details regarding Dell hardware and orders. However, it reportedly does not include sensitive financial information such as payment details, email addresses, or phone numbers. A spokesperson for Dell elaborated:
“We recently identified an incident involving a Dell portal with access to a database containing limited types of customer information, including name, physical address, and certain Dell hardware and order information”.
A sample screenshot of the stolen data reveals that the hacker accessed columns containing information such as service tags, items, dates, countries, warranties, organization names, cities, provinces, postal codes, customer codes, and order numbers. The affected records are believed to cover purchases made between 2017 and 2024.
Dell’s Response and Customer Notifications
Upon identifying the breach, Dell immediately launched an investigation, notified law enforcement, and enlisted a third-party forensic team to assess the situation.
The company has since been actively monitoring the data exposure and is working to safeguard its customers’ information.
Dell communicated the following to its customers via email about data breach 2024:
“Dell Technologies takes the privacy and confidentiality of your information seriously. We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell.”
Despite Dell’s assurance that there is “not a significant risk” to customers, the company advised them to remain vigilant and beware of scammers who may impersonate Dell staff using the stolen information.

Preceding Incidents and Regulatory Context
This is not the first time Dell has faced a data security incident. In 2018, the company experienced a network breach, which led to customer passwords being reset.
In light of increasing data security threats, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has expanded its data loss reporting requirements to cover telecommunications and voice-over-IP services, emphasizing the importance of robust data protection in the tech industry.
