History of Del Taco
Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson opened the first Del Taco in Yermo, California, in 1964. Their menu included tacos for just 19 cents, tostadas, fries, and cheeseburgers for 24 cents. On its first day of operation, the chain earned $169, which translates to the sale of approximately 900 tacos.
During the 1970s, Del Taco experienced significant growth. By 1977, it had 50 restaurants, and by the following year, that number had doubled to 100. The menu also diversified, adding new items such as the taco sandwich, quesadillas, and ice cream.
In 1988, the brand significantly expanded its presence by merging with Naugles, which allowed it to broaden its geographic reach. It also began operating 24 hours a day to cater to the needs of an always-active lifestyle.
Throughout the 1990s, Del Taco prepared for significant expansion by implementing several initiatives focused on improving the customer experience and strengthening its brand image, including a redesign of its logo.
In 2006, the chain nearly doubled in size, reaching its 500th location in 2008. That same year, a new dessert was added to the menu: caramel cheesecake bites, which quickly became a customer favorite. Additionally, a special promotion was launched offering a humorous interpretation of the brand.
With the introduction of “The Del Taco,” the “Buck & Under” menu, and the inclusion of fresh ingredients like sliced avocado, Del Taco established itself in 2010 as a leader in offering fresh, quality food at affordable prices.
