The History of Crayola

In 1885, Edwin Binney and his cousin C. Harold Smith began their operations at Peekskill Chemical Works in New York, a company previously acquired by Binney’s father, Joseph Peekskill. This factory specialized in producing carbon black pigment, a product that revolutionized several industries, becoming the preferred option for ink printers and shoe polish manufacturers.

Additionally, this pigment was used as a new dye to increase the durability of car tires, which were previously white. Later, Edwin and Harold changed the company’s name to “Binney & Smith” and expanded their range of products by incorporating new pigments.

In 1902, with a strong commitment to education, Binney & Smith was already producing its successful line of student pencils and launched the innovative dustless chalk, a product so impactful it received a gold medal that same year. It was at that moment that Binney & Smith created a line of crayons that would forever transform the world of color and children’s art.

In 1903, Crayola crayons were born, offering vibrant colors and great quality, becoming a trusted supplier for schools. In 1996, Binney & Smith opened the “Crayola Crayon Factory” in Easton, Pennsylvania, a 20,000-square-foot space dedicated to creativity that welcomes thousands of visitors. In 2003, the brand celebrated its centennial in the market.

What does the word Crayola mean?

Alice Stead Binney, the wife of the company’s founder, came up with the name. The word is a combination of “craie,” which means chalk in French, and “ola,” derived from “oily.”

When was the first Crayola crayon box made?

The first Crayola crayon box was made in 1903 with 8 colors. It was sold for five cents and contained the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black.

It has a presence in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America (including the Caribbean islands), and South America.
