The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has revealed the details regarding the number of entries for this year’s event. While there has been an increase compared to the previous year, the figures still fall significantly short of the record-breaking volumes seen in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Let’s delve into the statistics and trends shaping the renowned festival.
Cannes Lions 2023: Growing Number of Entries
Before the official commencement of the festival on Monday, June 19, it has been reported that a total of 26,992 entries from 86 different countries have been submitted. This represents a 6% increase compared to the 25,465 entries received in 2022.
Comparing the figures with previous years, it becomes evident that the number of entries for 2023 is lower than that of 2021 (which included entries from 2020) and significantly lower than the record-breaking 43,100 cases in 2016.
Significant Decline in 2018
It is worth noting that 2018 marked a significant decline in the number of entries for the creativity festival. During that year, the festival’s organization faced strong criticism, particularly from prominent professionals in the advertising industry, including the major holdings WPP and Publicis.
Positive Trends in Cannes Lions 2023
In the 2023 edition, organizers highlight an 18% increase in entries from consumer product brand companies, emphasizing the value placed on creativity that drives business success. Additionally, the inclusion of a new category, Entertainment Lions for Gaming, and the refreshing categories regarding the introduction of the Metaverse across the Lions, with 609 competing entries, is seen as a positive move.
Furthermore, the Brand Experience & Activation Lions category witnessed a 16% increase in submissions, reflecting brands’ focus on renewal and enhancing customer experiences and brand building. The Creative Strategy Lions category also experienced a notable 35% increase in entries from the previous year.
The Creative Business Transformation Lions category saw a 59% growth in submissions between 2022 and 2023. This category, now in its third year at the world’s premier advertising event, showcases the evolving nature of the industry.
Additionally, entries for Glass: The Lion for Change and Innovation Lions increased by 30%.
Country-wise Breakdown
In terms of country-wise participation, the United States leads the pack with 7,303 entries, followed by the United Kingdom with 2,200 entries. Notably, Brazil, from Latin America, secures the third position with 2,037 entries.
Emirati Arab countries made their mark by securing the tenth position on the ranking, just behind Spain (734 entries).
