Why does Ben & Jerry’s give away free ice cream?

Since 1979, Ben & Jerry’s has celebrated Free Cone Day as a way to express gratitude to the customers who have supported them. What started as a simple thank-you gesture from co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield for the support they received during their first winter in Vermont has grown into a global event, with fans lining up to enjoy free ice cream in more than 35 countries.

How many cones will Ben & Jerry’s give away on Free Cone Day?

In the 2024 edition, the ice cream chain served over one million free cones, so a similar number is expected this time. But don’t wait too long—get yours quickly!

The History of Ben & Jerry’s

In 1978, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield took their first step in the business world by opening an ice cream shop in an old gas station in Burlington, Vermont. To learn how to make ice cream, they spent $5 on a correspondence course from Penn State and invested $12,000 to start their business, $4,000 of which was financed by a loan.

Success came quickly, and in 1979, Ben and Jerry celebrated the first anniversary of their shop by hosting the inaugural Free Cone Day. The following year, they moved to a location in an old coil factory on South Champlain Street in Burlington, where they began packaging their ice cream into pints to distribute to supermarkets and small businesses along the delivery routes that Ben covered from the back of his old car.

As Ben & Jerry’s ice cream grew in popularity, demand increased significantly, leading to the opening of their first franchise in Shelburne, Vermont, in 1981. The original gas station was eventually demolished to make way for a parking lot.

In the 2000s, Ben & Jerry’s became a wholly owned subsidiary of Unilever. However, through a unique acquisition agreement, an independent board of directors was established to lead the company, with the goal of maintaining and expanding its social mission, as well as the integrity of the brand and the quality of its products. Today, the ice cream company is as famous as the joy its delicious flavors bring.
