History of Barnes & Noble
The company traces its roots back to 1873, when Charles M. Barnes opened a book business from his home in Wheaton, Illinois. In 1917, his son William partnered with G. Clifford Noble in New York, officially forming Barnes & Noble. During the Great Depression, the company opened its iconic store at Fifth Avenue and 18th Street, which became world-renowned for its wide selection of academic, textbook, and medical books.
In 1971, entrepreneur Leonard Riggio purchased the brand and its flagship store, integrating it into his successful book retail business. Under his leadership, the store was transformed into “The World’s Largest Bookstore.” In the following decades, Barnes & Noble expanded rapidly through acquisitions, including B. Dalton Bookseller in 1987, making it a national chain.
In the 1990s, the company revolutionized the industry with the “superstore” concept, offering a vast array of books, music, games, and a comfortable atmosphere with knowledgeable staff. It went public in 1993 and launched its website BN.com in 1997. During the 2000s, it further expanded into publishing and digital ventures, acquiring SparkNotes and launching its NOOK e-reader.
In 2019, Elliott Advisors acquired Barnes & Noble after previously purchasing Waterstones in the UK. James Daunt, the CEO of Waterstones and founder of Daunt Books, was appointed CEO of Barnes & Noble. Today, the company operates in over 600 communities across all 50 U.S. states and remains the leading retail bookstore in the country, blending tradition with innovation in every location.
