Attack on Donald Trump: What happened? What we know so far

Trump's entourage left the site quickly, and although his specific health status was not immediately disclosed

Former United States President, Donald Trump, was evacuated from the stage this Saturday while he was giving a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, following an apparent attack. The incident occurred just a few minutes after Trump started his speech, which had already begun significantly late. Attendees and security personnel were caught off guard by small explosions that sounded like distant gunshots.

Immediate reaction and evacuation

Trump, who had only been speaking for a few minutes, touched his face with his right hand, as if reacting to an impact, and fell to the ground. He was quickly covered and protected by Secret Service agents. Despite the initial confusion and panic, the former president was evacuated from the stage showing some blood on his face but raising his fist, a sign that he was still conscious and in apparently good condition. Secret Service agents and heavily armed police acted promptly amid the screams of concern and support from the public.

Health status and security measures

Trump’s entourage left the site quickly, and although his specific health status was not immediately disclosed, Trump himself indicated through AP news agency that he was “fine” and was receiving a medical check-up near the rally site. The area was quickly cordoned off by security forces, treating it as a “crime scene,” and rally attendees were evacuated.

Reactions and political context

The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, expressed his concern and support via X, noting that he was praying for Trump. Internationally, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned the incident, describing any form of violence as “irrational and inhumane.” Meanwhile, when asked about the incident after leaving mass in Rehoboth Beach, President Joe Biden simply responded with a terse “No,” without providing further details.

This attack occurs just before the Republican convention that is to be held next week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Trump is expected to be reconfirmed as the presidential candidate by the Republican Party, adding a layer of political tension to the already charged electoral atmosphere.
