ATM skimming scams are on the rise, and it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant. Criminals are using skimming devices to steal credit and debit card information from ATMs and other locations. These devices can be placed over the original card reader, inserted in the card reader, or situated along exposed cables. Pinhole cameras or keypad overlays are used to record a customer’s keystrokes, and hidden cameras can be placed on or around ATMs to record PIN numbers as customers type them. And that’s not all – hidden cameras can be placed on or around ATMs to record PIN numbers as customers type them.
To avoid being a victim of ATM skimming, it is important to inspect ATMs, POS terminals, and other card readers before using them. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched. If you notice anything unusual, do not use the machine. Pull at the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN, and cover the keypad when you enter your PIN to prevent cameras from recording your entry.
To identify hidden cameras at ATMs, you should check for false covers, scratches, glue, adhesive tape, or other possible signs of tampering. Thieves may hide tiny cameras on or around ATMs, so look for tiny holes in the ATM housing or in something else that looks like it was hastily stuck onto the ATM to cover a small camera.
Additionally, it is recommended to use ATMs in a well-lit, indoor location, as they are less vulnerable to skimming. Avoid using an ATM in poorly lit areas or ATMs that aren’t monitored by a surveillance camera. If you see something suspicious, report it immediately to the financial institution, owner of the machine, and the authorities.
Remember, prevention is key when it comes to ATM skimming scams. Stay vigilant, protect your card information, and report anything suspicious. Don’t let these scams put a damper on your financial security.
