Maternity has always been a collective experience in Latin communities. For generations, mothers have relied on the wise advice of their own mothers and grandmothers. However, in 2025, a new member has joined the support circle: artificial intelligence. According to a survey conducted by Microsoft, 56% of Latina mothers who already use AI say it has become “the newest member of their parenting community they never knew they needed.”
This finding is part of the “Abuela-Approved AI” initiative, a campaign led by Microsoft to highlight how technology—especially its Copilot tool—is being respectfully and functionally integrated into the lives of Latina moms. The campaign seeks to demonstrate that artificial intelligence does not replace traditional wisdom, but rather complements it.
Why are Latina mothers increasingly turning to tools like Microsoft Copilot?
Although 70% of Latina moms surveyed still rely on their own mothers for parenting advice, less than 10% currently use artificial intelligence for that same purpose. However, the data reveals growth potential. Of the total number of mothers who already use AI in their daily lives, 38% have adopted it as a form of parenting guidance. This is due to several factors that blend practicality with emotional support.
24/7 availability, cited by 67% of respondents, ranks as one of the strongest reasons for turning to AI. In addition, nearly half (48%) value AI for being a “nonjudgmental” source of support, providing relief when dealing with sensitive topics that can sometimes be uncomfortable even within the family. Another 34% also highlighted using Copilot as an effective way to manage stress and ask difficult questions without fear of judgment.

What kind of support do Latina mothers find in Artificial Intelligence?
Microsoft has identified four pillars that explain how AI becomes a comprehensive support tool for Latina moms:
- Practical: From organizing family schedules to planning events or tracking academic performance, Copilot helps optimize everyday tasks.
- Creative: Many moms use AI to find innovative ideas for family celebrations, school activities, or traditional recipes.
- Emotional: Copilot offers a neutral and culturally sensitive perspective on topics such as discipline, self-esteem, or adolescence.
- Cultural: Perhaps one of the most touching aspects is AI’s role in preserving cultural identity, whether by keeping family recipes alive (58%), commemorating meaningful moments (52%), or reinforcing the use of the Spanish language (43%).
Copilot speaks Latin American Spanish
To strengthen the bond between technology and culture, Microsoft announced the launch of new native Spanish voices for Copilot Voice, named Elm and Alder. These voices aim to offer a closer and more authentic experience, like chatting with a Spanish-speaking friend. Additionally, Copilot Vision will allow users to interact visually with AI in real-time, whether from the Edge browser or mobile devices on iOS and Android.
This personalization goes beyond language. As explained by Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and CMO at Microsoft:
“Every day we hear incredible stories of how Copilot makes people’s lives easier by understanding the broader context of their lives and showing up to support them on their own terms.”
The “Abuela-Approved AI” campaign aims to show that Copilot can be a modern extension of the *comadre*, that trusted figure who not only takes care of the kids but also advises, listens, and guides.
