Kellogg Company has recently announced the names for its two future public companies, following a planned separation into businesses focused on global snacking and North American cereal. The company intends to complete the spin-off by the end of 2023. Despite the name changes, the “Kellogg’s” brand will continue to appear on product packaging for both companies globally.
Kellanova: The Global Snacking Powerhouse
Kellanova, a combination of the company’s heritage and a Latin term meaning ‘new,’ will encompass the global snacking, international cereal and noodles, plant-based foods, and North American frozen breakfast businesses. The company aims to evolve as a next-generation global snacking powerhouse with a diverse portfolio of iconic brands, such as Pringles, Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, MorningStar Farms, Incogmeato, Gardenburger, Nutri-Grain, RXBAR, and Eggo. Kellanova will also oversee a range of international cereal brands, including Kellogg’s, Frosties, Zucaritas, Special K, Krave, Miel Pops, Coco Pops, and Crunchy Nut, among others.
Steve Cahillane, Kellogg Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and the future Chairman and CEO of Kellanova, stated that the name Kellanova “signals the Company’s ambition for the future, building on the strong brand equity and legacy built over the past 117 years as Kellogg Company.”
WK Kellogg Co: Honoring a Legacy in North America
The North American cereal business will be named WK Kellogg Co, paying homage to founder W.K. Kellogg and his innovative spirit. The company will operate in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean, offering a portfolio of world-class brands, such as Kellogg’s, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Mini-Wheats, Special K, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Kashi, and Bear Naked.
Gary Pilnick, Chief Executive Officer Designate of WK Kellogg Co, explained that the new name highlights the company’s focus on “propelling the company into the future” while still honoring its heritage.
Employee Involvement in the Naming Process
Kellogg engaged in a thorough naming process, involving employees from around the world. Almost 1,000 employees submitted over 4,000 name suggestions and qualitative feedback. About 20% of employees who submitted names suggested a variation of “W.K. Kellogg” for the North American cereal business name, “WK Kellogg Co.” Employee submissions containing “nova” inspired the global snacking business name, “Kellanova.”
Cahillane added that the unveiling of the new names is an exciting milestone for both companies as they move toward realizing their full potential as independent businesses.
Kellanova will trade on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol “K.” Details for WK Kellogg Co’s ticker and exchange will be announced in the coming months. Kellogg Company will continue to provide updates on the separation of the businesses at unleashingourpotential.com.
