According to Statista’s Digital Market Insights, online dating providers are expected to have reached 441 million active users worldwide by the end of 2023. The segment is expected to generate approximately $8.7 billion in revenue globally through online dating, casual dating and matchmaking services.
The United States is the country with the highest percentage of its population using online dating services at 21.9 percent. It is also the country in which the segment generates the most revenue, with an expected market size of $2.5 billion in 2023.
The United States is the clear market leader, but online dating is also quite popular in European countries such as the UK (19.1 percent penetration rate) or France (12.7 percent). Despite usage relative to population being lower in India and China (at 9.1 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively), the sheer size of the countries’ populations translates into revenues that by far surpass those generated in European countries. The countries have big online matchmaking markets generating around three quarters of these online dating service revenues.
Online dating in the United States
Whether it is used as a tool for finding a soulmate or as a gateway to casual hookups, online dating has become one of the most popular avenues for singles in the United States. During the past decade, consumer demand for internet dating services has increased significantly due to busy work schedules and the proliferation of broadband internet connections. What was considered a last attempt for the desperate and lonely not too long ago is now becoming socially acceptable, and as the stigma is beginning to dissipate, a vast plethora of matchmaking platforms are making internet dating in the United States a multi-million-dollar industry.
