The Netflix series Adolescence has been a huge success on the streaming platform, accumulating millions of views worldwide. Fans have been captivated by the intense storyline, but did you know that there is another ending that the series was originally going to have?

That’s right! The director of the miniseries, Philip Barantini, revealed that they originally planned for this psychological thriller to end differently than what you saw on your screen. Here’s what was written in the original script.

What was the other ending of the Netflix series Adolescence?

At the end of the series, after Jamie pleads guilty to stabbing his classmate to death, his parents begin to question what they did wrong in their upbringing. The final scene focuses on Eddie, Jamie’s father, entering the teenager’s room… and it was right at that moment that the producers decided to change the course at the last minute.

In the scene originally written in the script, Eddie was supposed to enter the room and collapse on Jamie’s bed, then cover his body with the sheets; however, the final take was changed, and what you saw on screen was filmed instead: Eddie entering the room, crying uncontrollably while holding his son’s teddy bear, a scene that represented more the pain and the family breakdown after the crime.

What is the Netflix series Adolescence about?

This psychological thriller, directed by Philip Barantini and written by Jack Thorne, stars Stephen Graham and consists of only four episodes filmed in continuous takes.

The plot follows Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy arrested in northern England on suspicion of murdering a classmate. As the story unfolds, a detective and a therapist work hard to uncover the truth behind the crime.

What does the secret language in the Netflix series Adolescence mean?

While the series is not based on a true story, as the creators were inspired by news stories about young students involved in knife-related crimes, the terms mentioned do exist in real life and refer to much darker things than you might think. Here are some of the terms featured in the series:

  • Manosphere: A collection of forums and digital communities where antifeminist ideas and distorted perceptions about gender are spread.
  • 80/20 Rule: This theory suggests that 80% of women romantically link only with the 20% of the most attractive men, leaving the rest with no opportunities in the romantic realm.
  • Incel (involuntary celibate): A term used to describe men who see themselves as unable to have sexual relationships, blaming women and society for their situation. This group has grown on platforms like Reddit and 4chan, where hate speech and misogyny thrive.

  • Red pill: Taken from the movie The Matrix, this metaphor is used to describe the supposed “awakening” of men to the “reality” about women and feminism, all from a misogynistic perspective.
  • Blue pill: Symbolizes the ignorance of those who have not adopted the manosphere mentality.
  • Gynocentrism: The belief that society is organized for the benefit of women.
  • Chad: A man perceived as hegemonic and highly desirable to women.
  • Beta/Cuck: An average man, considered inferior to “Chad.”
  • Stacey: The female equivalent of “Chad,” characterized by being attractive and highly desired.
  • Femoid/Foid: Abbreviation for “female humanoid.” A derogatory term used by incels.

Will there be a second season of Adolescence on Netflix?

Although Netflix has not commented on this, it seems unlikely that it will happen, given that the production is presented in a miniseries format, which typically tells the whole story in just a few episodes; however, the platform has renewed some miniseries in the past, so we will need to wait for an official announcement in the coming months.
