Why are the stores closing?
The decision to close these locations is due to the disappointing financial results the company has experienced recently. These are underperforming stores that will cease operations as part of a strategy to address economic challenges and regain momentum for the company.
The closures are part of a restructuring that includes changes in top management, a 10% reduction in corporate staff, and the end of Amazon returns at some stores. The retailer’s sales dropped 9.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 7.2% for the full year. Additionally, Kohl’s has indicated that it expects a 2% net decline in sales for 2025.
The company also plans to close an e-commerce logistics center in San Bernardino, California, in May. This center has been operating since 2010.
Kohl’s History
The company was founded on September 12, 1962, by Maxwell Kohl in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Before opening the department store, Maxwell already owned 48 supermarkets in Wisconsin.
Although Kohl’s was originally conceived as a luxury store, over time, the company changed its market focus under new management. The Kohl family maintained ownership of the business until 1979 when Maxwell’s son, Herb, decided to leave the company to become a U.S. Senator.
What are Kohl’s brands?
The company’s private-label brands account for nearly half of its $19 billion in annual sales. These include in-house clothing lines like American Beauty, Apt. 9, Croft & Barrow, Jumping Beans, So, Tek Gear, and Urban Pipeline.
What is Kohl’s Rewards?
Kohl’s Rewards is the company’s loyalty program. Members earn 5% in rewards on any purchase made using any form of payment. They can also earn 7.5% when using a Kohl’s card. Your Kohl’s Cash rewards will be issued in increments of $5 on the first day of each month. You’ll have 30 days to spend your rewards issued on anything in the store, online or with the Kohl’s App.
