2026 World Cup: Why was the Azteca Stadium renamed Banorte Stadium?

The Azteca Stadium, now Banorte Stadium, is a legendary venue that has hosted some of the most historic moments in soccer history

ESTADIO AZTECA STADIUM AZTEC 2025 BANORTE

One of the most iconic stadiums in world football, the Azteca Stadium, has undergone a significant transformation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Now renamed Banorte Stadium, this rebranding is part of a major sponsorship and financing deal between Grupo Ollamani and Banorte, one of Mexico’s leading financial institutions.

The renaming of the stadium is linked to a multi-million-dollar agreement, where Banorte becomes the primary sponsor in exchange for a 2,100 million pesos (approximately 106 million USD) loan, which will be repaid over 12 years. This funding aims to modernize and renovate the stadium, ensuring that it meets the highest international standards for the upcoming World Cup.

What Are the Renovations Planned for Banorte Stadium?

The Estadio Banorte, previously known as the Azteca Stadium, is set to undergo extensive renovations. The investment from Banorte will be added to the 1,500 million pesos already allocated by Grupo Ollamani for the stadium’s transformation, making it one of the most modern football venues in the world.

The remodeling project includes:

  • Infrastructure improvements to enhance safety and accessibility.
  • Sustainability initiatives, making it a more eco-friendly stadium.
  • Technological upgrades, including better connectivity and digital fan experiences.
  • Modernized seating and hospitality areas, ensuring greater comfort for spectators.

The stadium closed for renovations at the end of 2024, and it is expected to reopen by late 2025 or early 2026, just in time for the World Cup opening match on June 11, 2026.

Why Was Banorte Chosen as the Main Sponsor?

Banorte, known as the “Bank of Mexico”, has a strong national presence and has positioned itself as a supporter of Mexican sports and culture. The partnership with Grupo Ollamani not only provides funding for the stadium’s modernization but also grants Banorte exclusive rights for branding, advertising, and financial services within the venue.

According to the agreement, Banorte will benefit from:

  • Exclusive advertising rights inside the stadium.
  • Brand visibility on official merchandise and digital platforms.
  • Naming rights for a period of at least 12 years.

Carlos Hank González, Chairman of Banorte, stated, “We are proud to be part of this transformation. This agreement aligns with our mission to support and strengthen Mexico’s sporting legacy.”

What Is the Historical Significance of the Azteca Stadium?

The Azteca Stadium, now Banorte Stadium, is a legendary venue that has hosted some of the most historic moments in soccer history. It was inaugurated on May 29, 1966, with a match between Club América and Torino of Italy.

Some of its most memorable events include:

  • Hosting the 1970 FIFA World Cup Final, where Pelé led Brazil to victory against Italy (4-1).
  • The 1986 FIFA World Cup Final, where Diego Maradona secured Argentina’s triumph over Germany (3-2).
  • The “Hand of God” goal and the “Goal of the Century”, both scored by Maradona against England in the 1986 quarter-finals.
  • The 1970 semi-final match between Italy and Germany (4-3), famously known as the “Game of the Century.”

Capacity

With a current capacity of 81,070 spectators, Banorte Stadium will be the first stadium in history to host matches in three different FIFA World Cups (1970, 1986, and 2026).

Has the Stadium’s Name Ever Changed Before?

Interestingly, this is not the first time the Azteca Stadium has undergone a name change. In 1997, Televisa, the stadium’s former owner, renamed it “Estadio Guillermo Cañedo” in honor of Guillermo Cañedo de la Bárcena, a key figure in Mexican football. However, due to public backlash, the original Azteca Stadium name was restored shortly after.

The rebranding to Banorte Stadium, however, is different—it is a strategic business decision backed by a major financial deal and infrastructure investment.

How Will Banorte Stadium Be Involved in the 2026 World Cup?

Banorte Stadium is set to play a crucial role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It has been designated as the venue for the opening ceremony and the inaugural match, making it the most significant stadium in the Mexican leg of the tournament.

Apart from the opening match, Banorte Stadium is expected to host at least five World Cup games, further cementing its place in football history.
