Reebok’s return to golf

Reebok is making its return to golf as part of its efforts to redefine its identity as a brand focused on team sports apparel and footwear. This image had largely faded during the time Adidas owned the brand, during which it was primarily positioned as a fitness label.

Since Authentic Brands Group took over Reebok after Adidas sold it in 2022, the company has been working to strengthen its presence in various sports, including tennis, basketball, football, and baseball. This has been achieved through new collection launches and celebrity partnerships.

In February of this year, the brand unveiled its first high-performance basketball shoe in over ten years, called Engine A, and plans to carry out a global marketing campaign featuring prominent WNBA talents, such as Angel Reese and Lexie Brown, among others.

As for its entry into golf, Reebok has designed a strategy aimed at attracting both professional players and young enthusiasts who have discovered an interest in golf during and after the pandemic, a period when outdoor activities became increasingly important.

Golf has sparked growing interest in various fashion trends, and Reebok intends to capitalize on this wave by aligning itself with Bryson DeChambeau, one of the emerging stars of professional golf.

Reebok’s history

Reebok’s history dates back to 1895 in Bolton, England, when Joseph William Foster began creating spiked shoes aimed at improving athletes’ performance. This innovative approach led to the creation of the company J.W. Foster and Sons.

In 1958, Foster’s grandsons, Jeff and Joe, established the Reebok brand, a name derived from Afrikaans, meaning “antelope” or “gazelle,” symbolizing speed and grace.

During the 1980s, Reebok became a leader in the sports footwear sector, notably with the launch of the Freestyle aerobic shoes, which set a new trend in the fitness world. Since then, Reebok has continued to innovate and grow, having been acquired by Adidas in 2005, while still maintaining its commitment to performance and design.
