Southwest Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will start charging a fee for checked luggage, ending its policy of allowing passengers to check up to two bags for free, a practice it had maintained for years to differentiate itself from other airlines.

Why will Southwest Airlines charge for checked luggage?

According to the company, it has faced financial challenges, leading investors to push for increased profits. This has forced the airline to cut 1,750 jobs, representing 15% of its workforce. Now, with the introduction of checked luggage fees, Southwest aims to generate revenue that will help balance its finances.

“We have a tremendous opportunity to meet the current and future needs of our customers, attract new customer segments that we don’t currently compete for, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines, in a statement.

Southwest estimated that the implementation of luggage fees would generate approximately $1.5 billion in annual revenue.

How much will Southwest Airlines charge for checked luggage?

So far, the company has not specified the exact fee it will charge for checked luggage. However, it has stated that the new policy will begin with bookings made from May 28.

Who will not pay for checked luggage on Southwest Airlines?

The airline stated that it will continue to allow free checked luggage for up to two bags for Rapid Rewards A-List preferred members and passengers who purchase Business Select fares. Additionally, A-List members will be able to check one bag for free, as will those with a Rapid Rewards credit card.

Passengers at lower levels of Rapid Rewards, those who have not purchased business class tickets, or those without the airline’s credit card will be required to pay for checked luggage.

Southwest Airlines announces new fee

In addition to the checked luggage fee, the airline also announced that it will implement a new basic fare applicable to economy tickets. Furthermore, for next year, it plans to offer designated seating for passengers for an extra charge, providing more legroom.

What is Rapid Rewards?

Rapid Rewards is Southwest Airlines’ loyalty program. Rapid Rewards members will earn points for every Southwest Vacations package they book. Points will be distributed once the vacation is completed.

Can I use Rapid Rewards points to book a vacation package with Southwest?

While it is possible to earn Rapid Rewards points when traveling with a Southwest Vacations package, these points cannot be used to purchase a vacation package.

How do I request a refund from Southwest Airlines?

In certain situations, you may be eligible for a full or partial refund for unused accommodation, ground transportation, and activities. You can cancel your vacation online or by calling Southwest Vacations’ customer service center. To cancel online, access your reservation from the booking recovery page or log in to your Southwest Vacations account and follow the instructions to cancel your reservation.

If you choose to cancel, your eligibility for a refund will be limited. To request a refund, you must submit a refund form after canceling your reservation. If you cancel online, you will be provided with access to an online refund request form once your cancellation is confirmed.

If you decline Travel Protection and cancel your reservation, the value of the land/attraction portion of your booking (after applicable penalties) will be provided as Southwest Vacations Travel Credit.

Depending on your refund, you may receive:

  • Southwest flight credits
  • Southwest Vacations travel credits
  • A refund to your original payment method. Eligible refunds are generally processed within 21 days.
